Risk Free, Tax Free Cash Based Returns

National Savings and Investments (NS&I) offer a wide range of savings products and are backed by the Government.

NS&I also offer a number of tax-free savings products which can offer healthy diversification away from traditional bank and building society deposit accounts.

National Savings Index Linked Certificates are unusual – they offer risk free, tax free returns, after allowing for inflation (as measured by the Retail Prices Index) when held for the specified term. They are particularly suitable for higher rate income tax payers.

Two options are available – a three year fixed term and a five year fixed term.  Both products currently offer a return of index linking plus 1% per annum when held for the full three and five year term. There are no explicit charges and the actual return achieved will not be known until the end of the term. Capital is never at risk but the return will be reduced if accessed early.

The maximum investment is limited to £15,000 per person, per issue, meaning a married couple can invest up to £60,000 in total. Typically, two or three issues are available each year. Paying less tax should improve the return on your savings.

Certificates can be applied for on-line or via the Post Office.
